50MW solar systems to be installed on 645 govt, MCD buildings – The Times of India
New Delhi: Under Delhi govt’s solar policy, 50 megawatt (MW) grid-connected rooftop systems will be installed on 645 buildings of different departments and Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Power minister Atishi, who approved the solar plant installation initiative on Tuesday, said the move is aligned with govt’s recently approved policy.
The project entails installation of the solar power plants on 645 buildings including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, DTC depots, DTL substations, and many more, which are larger than 500 square meters. The total power capacity from these plants is projected to be 50MW.
“The Delhi Solar Policy, passed by the Cabinet on Jan 29, 2024, is being hailed as one of the best and most progressive policies in India. This policy is key to expand the use of solar power in Delhi’s green energy contribution and total power capacity,” said Atishi.
The policy, however, is yet to be notified and is pending with lieutenant governor VK Saxena who has raised some queries on certain provisions.
Atishi said, “With such an initiative, we are working towards making our govt buildings more energy-efficient so that they become sustainable and complete their energy needs by themselves”. Govt target is to generate 25% of the city’s electricity through solar power plants by 2027.
Under the policy, people installing solar panels on their rooftops would get increased generation-based incentives from the earlier policy, a capital subsidy and facility to sell their excess generated electricity in real-time to other consumers in the national capital.
It was also announced that Delhi govt will give a capital subsidy to residential consumers of Rs 2,000 per kW, up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 per consumer for the solar systems’ installation. This was over and above the capital subsidy of central govt.
Equating supplying 24×7 free electricity to over 40% of domestic consumers in the city with “Ram Rajya”, finance minister Atishi had allocated Rs 3,353 crore for power department in the 2024-25 budget.
In the budget, provisions were made to install solar plants on all its buildings to generate 4,500MW — 25% of Delhi’s total power supply — from solar energy by 2027.
Around 30% of Delhi’s power supply comes from green and renewable energy. Currently, 255MW is produced from rooftop solar power plants.
While presenting the budget earlier this month, the power minister had said that solar rooftop plants are installed on 1280 govt buildings in the city, and by 2024-25, every building under Delhi govt will have solar plants on its roof.
